This research explores the barriers to, opportunities for, and the potential of electrifying the LMI multifamily housing sector.
The study assesses the barriers and opportunities related to the electrification of the LMI multifamily building sector. TIt includes interviews with developers, designers, advocates, utilities, and tenants on topics of electrification, as well as an assessment of the potential of electrifying these buildings. To support these findings text-based analysis is used for transcript data and statistical-analysis on energy and demographic data. The project also evaluates the electrification readiness of the existing multifamily building stock, market priming activities for programs that may reduce energy cost burden (e.g., time-of-use rates), and policy design suggestions.
Furthermore, Technical support for the M-RISE program is being provided with insights from the LMI study informing its design and implementation to ensure an equitable and effective rollout. M-RISE is a new New Jersey Clean Energy Program initiative that is anticipated to support comprehensive energy efficiency projects for low- and moderate-income (LMI) multifamily homes.
