Restoration and Future Stewardship: Regeneration and the Next Generation
4th Annual Sustainable Raritan River Conference!
June 14, 2012
Duke Farms, Hillsborough, NJ
The 4th Sustainable Raritan River Initiative Regional Conference brought 200 people to Duke Farms on June 14, 2012, to share successes, discuss emerging issues and plan strategies to promote quality of life in the Raritan River valley.
For eight hours, we shared, argued, laughed and studied problems that affect all of us. We came away with a renewed understanding of each other, the issues we face and how to work more effectively together to protect and restore value to the place we call home. As representatives of government, environmental quality, business and academia, we saw the issues from each others’ perspectives and grew to appreciate the true complexity of “easy answers.”
Workshops ranged from citizen and student involvement in gathering environmental data to municipal planning for sustainability, to removal of dams and restoration of floodplains as an effort to reduce the impacts of development and weather changes in our region. Speakers in the general session address our planning practices, the need for an ecological overlay to our future land use decisions and the importance of working locally to achieve small and large changes that improve our quality of life.
