A Living Lab at Rutgers to Optimize Future Open-plan Work Spaces

Rutgers Living Lab, New Brunswick campus, facilitates hands-on learning about the built environment.  Installed sensor network systems will enable the collection of big data on both behavioral and science/engineering topics. Courses that will use these data for instruction include Methods of Planning Analysis II and Green Buildings (Bloustein), and Building Information Modeling (Engineering), with wider involvement expected in the future.  The types of data intended to be collected include: (1) environmental measures, (2) occupancy use, and (3) perception and satisfaction with various environments. In the future a sensor network may be installed facing the intersection in New Brunswick Train Station to measure the pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
